Comme je vous le disais lors d'un précédent "post", le kiosque du parc de la pépinière est toujours utilisé à l'occasion de concerts. C'était le cas aujourd'hui, avec le concert de plusieurs élèves sortant de l'école "music academy international" de Nancy. Ambiance country assurée pour ce 14 juillet!

As I told you in a previous post, the bandstand in the "parc de la pépinière" is used for concerts. Today, it was the case with a concert of some students of the "music international academy" of Nancy. They especially played country music. It was great!

Leintrey's craters / "les entonnoirs" de Leintrey

Le 11 juillet 1916, 4 mines explosent à Leintrey. Le paysage va en rester marqué : plusieurs excavations d'une soixantaine de mètres de diamètre et de 15 à 20 mètres de profondeur sont encore visibles aujourd'hui. Une centaine d'hommes perdit la vie lors de ces explosions.
Le site est impressionnant. Encore une fois, on se rend compte que les stigmates de la guerre sont partout en Lorraine. Ils ont marqué le paysage et les esprits.

July 11, 1916 : 4 mines explode in the village of Leintrey. The landscape will keep the marks of it : several craters of 60 meters in diameter and between 15 and 20 meters in depth are visibles. About a hundred soldiers died during these explosions.
This place is very impressive. The war marks are everywhere in Lorraine.

Je partage avec vous une petite vue sur les champs et le village d'Emberménil. Au loin, on peut distinguer quelques éoliennes.

Tous les étés, dès que la nuit est tombée, la place Stan' s'illumine le temps d'un spectacle son et lumière qui dure 15 minutes. Ici, on reconnaît unu œuvre de Klimt.

Each summer, when the night has come, the Stanislas square is floddlit during a show with music and light that last 15 minutes. Here, you can recognize a famous paint of Klimt.

Aujourd'hui, une photo de l'ossuaire de Douaumont près de Verdun. C'est une nécropole nationale. Crée après la bataille de Verdun, il abrite un cloître de 137 mètres de long avec les tombaux de 130 000 soldats inconnus. En face de l'ossuaire se trouve un immense cimetière.

C'est un lieu chargé d'histoire. Une "visite" qui met la chair de poule...

Today, a photo of the Douaumont ossuary, near Verdun. It's a national necropolis. The ossuary was built after the verdun battle. Lunéville castle / le château de Lunéville (1)

Le duc Léopold, insatisfait de son palais ducal à Nancy, fit entièrement reconstruire le château de Lunéville au XVIIIe d'après les plans du château de Versailles. Le château a été embelli et agrandi par Stanislas qui en fit sa résidence principale.
Il est surnommé le "Versailles lorrain" et a été classé monument historique en 1901. Stanislas, dernier duc de Lorraine, y mourut accidentellement en 1766. Cette année marque l'annexion du duché de Lorraine par la France. Le château a connu un grave incendie en janvier 2003. Aujourd'hui il est encore en pleine restauration.

The Lunéville castle was totally rebuilt in the XVIIIth century by The duke Léopold unsatisfied of his palace in Nancy. The Luneville castle has the same plan as Versailles castle.The castle is nicknamed the "versailles of Lorraine". Stanislas, last duke of Lorraine, died in this castle in 1766. The same year, the duchy of Lorraine was annexed by the France. In 2003 a part of the castle burnt. It's not yet rebuilt.

Il n'y a pas beaucoup de magasins dans le quartier où j'habite mais nous avons une boulangerie pâtisserie toute proche, ce qui est déjà bien. J'ai aussi la chance d'avoir un mari qui va me chercher les croissants tous les dimanches matins!

There is not a lot of shop in the area where I live, but we are lucky to have a bread and cake shop. I am all the more lucky as my husband go to this shop every sunday to buy croissants for the breakfast!

Fontenoy la joute

Le village du livre de Fontenoy-la-Joûte a été créé en 1996. Ce petit village rural compte 19 bouquineries aménagées dans d'anciennes granges et qui vendent près de 800.000 livres d'occasion. Ce village rural du XIIème siècle a su se reconvertir d'une manière originale. Aujourd'hui, c'est un endroit fréquenté qui vit des livres. A titre d'exemple, le village du livre a reçu 64 000 visiteurs en 1996 et 89 000 en 1997. Au centre du village, on peut trouver ce panneau d'indication pour le moins original.

The books village of Fontenoy-la-Joûte was created in 1996. This small rural village numbers 19 second-hand booksellers set up in former barns. These booksellers sell 800.000 second-hand books. This rural village of the XIIth century found an original way to convert. Today, it's a busy place. There was 64 000 visitors in 1996 and 89 000 in 1997. Each year, this number increases. Une partie du parc de la pépinière est aménagé en roseraie. En ce moment, c'est la pleine période. Il y en a pour tous les goûts. Les nombreux bancs permettent de faire une pause et les paons adorent passer par là!

A part of "le parc de la pépinière" is a rose garden. Currently, the roses are in flower. There are flowers for all tastes. The benches give the occasion to have a break and peacoks love to have a walk in this garden!

L'église Saint-Joseph des Prémontrés, construite à proximité de l'ancienne porte Saint-Jean, sert de temple protestant depuis 1807.
L'hospice des prémontrés fut fondé en 1635. L'église fut construite sur les plans de Betto, très lentement : elle ne fut terminée qu'en 1759, par Claude Mique.

Aujourd'hui, je vous emmène au lac de pierre percée. C'est le plus grand lac artificiel de Lorraine (304 ha et 32 kilomètres de pourtour). C'est un endroit agréable pour se promener, surtout l'été, car tout le tour du lac est boisé.

Today, a photo of "le lac de pierre percée" (the pierced stone lake). It's the bigger artifical lake of Lorraine (304 hectares and a circumference of 32 kilometers); It's a very peaceful place to have a walk, especially in summer, as it's a wooded place.

Sur les remparts de la vieille-ville, adossé à la porte de la citadelle édifiée en 1598 par Charles III, se cache un petit jardin secret. De facture médiévale mais sous influence de la Renaissance, ce jardin présente des carrés de plantes aromatiques et médicinales.

Backing onto the Citadel Gate built by Charles III in 1598, formerly part of the ramparts of the Old Town of Nancy, the citadel garden has a unique atmosphere. The many tall trees provide very welcome shade in this secret garden of only 1500 sq yds.

Originally laid out in medieval times, but influenced by the Renaissance, this is a garden of aromatic and medicinal plants.

Un autre aspect de Nancy : la tour Thiers. C'est l'une des plus haute tour de la ville (90 mètres). La construction de cette tour n'a pas été bien perçue par les Nancéiens qui la considéraient comme une verrue dans le paysage urbain. Elle a du mal à trouver sa place dans un quartier dont le style est plutôt art nouveau.

Another sight of Nancy : the Thiers tower. It's one of the higher tower of the town (90 meters). The construction of this tower was badly received by the inhabitants of Nancy. They considered it as a real eyesore in the town. The Thiers tower is a little bit alone in a art nouveau style district.

Saurupt est un quartier de Nancy. Il est réputé pour ses habitations de style Ecole de Nancy (Art nouveau), construites au début du XXème siècle grâce à l'un des premiers projets de lotissement de la ville, dénommé "parc de Saurupt".

En 2007, le tournage du film il y a longtemps que je t'aime avec Elsa Zylberstein et Kristin Scott Thomas s'est déroulé dans la villa Les cigognes qui fait partie du quartier.

Saurupt is a district of Nancy. It's famous for the houses built in the "école de Nancy" (art nouveau) style at the beginning of the XXth century, hope to the first housing estate project of the town, called "Saurupt park".

In 2007, a film with Elsa Zylberstein and Kristin Scott Thomas ("il y a longtemps que je t'aime") was shot in the house called "les cigognes" (the storks) which is part of the district.

Nancy est aussi jumelée avec Newcastle-upon-Tyne (Royaume-Uni), Liège (Belgique), Karlsruhe (Allemagne), Padoue (Italie), Kiryat Shmona (Israël), Lublin (Pologne) et Cincinnati (Etats-Unis).

Nancy and Kanazawa (Japan) are twin towns. This sculpture is a present and you can find the same in Kanazawa.

La porte de la craffe / Craffe gate

La monumentale porte de la craffe témoigne de la qualité de l'enceinte protectrice de la ville à la fin du XIVème siècle. Les deux tours, édifiées en 1463, possèdent des murs de 3 mètres d'épaisseur qui résistèrent aux sièges de la ville. Elles étaient utilisées en qualité de prisons. Le lanternon central fut édifié au début du XVIIème siècle, il contenait une cloche récupérée à l'église Saint-Epvre afin de rythmer les heures, de marquer le couvre-feu, les exécutions capitales et les corvées. La croix de Lorraine est là pour rappeler que cet emblème fut adopté après la victoire de la bataille de Nancy.

This impressive gateway into Nancy was built at the end of the 14th century as part of the walls encircling the town. The large twin towers flanking the gate were added on at the end of the 15th century and were used as prisons. The small lantern above the main gate dates back to the 17th century and contained a bell which rang out the hours of the day, the beginning of the curfew and informed the population of public executions. The Lorraine Cross on the facade is a reminder that the emblem was adopted after the victory of the Battle of Nancy.

En prenant la peine de lever les yeux, on s'aperçoit que beaucoup de maison ont une vierge à l'enfant dans leurs angles, surtout en vieille ville. Ici, on voit aussi un beau blason de la ville.

A lot of houses, in the old town, have, in their corners, a madonna and child. Here, you can see a beautiful heraldry of the town too.

Une photo de la vitrine du magasin Baccarat à Nancy. Baccarat est une manufacture de cristal situé dans la petite ville de Baccarat (45km de Nancy).
En 1764, le roi Louis XV donne la permission de fonder une verrerie dans la ville de Baccarat à l'évêque de Metz, Louis-Joseph de Montmorency-Laval.
Baccarat reçut sa première commande royale en 1823 du roi Louis XVIII. Ce fut le début d'une longue série de commandes pour les familles royales et chefs d'Etat de toute la planète.
Par la suite, Baccarat connu une forte croissance en Asie.
En 1948, baccarat créa une filiale à New-York. En 2005, il existe 13 magasins Baccarat aux Etats-Unis.

Stanislas

Comment ne pas évoquer Stanislas un 11 avril? Et oui, le 11 avril, c'est la Saint Stanislas.

Cette photo remonte au mois de novembre. Chaque année, la place Stanislas est fleurie dans le cadre des "jardins éphémères", ce qui explique ce cadre inhabituel. La statue de ce cher Stanislas n'en est que mise en valeur.

Stanislas est indissociable de Nancy et de la Lorraine.

Stanislas Leszczynski est né à Lwow en Pologne, le 20 octobre 1677 et mort à Lunéville le 23 février 1766. Il fut roi de Pologne de 1704 à 1709 et de 1733 à 1736. C'est en 1737 qu'il devient duc de Lorraine et de Bar, titre qu'il gardat jusqu'à sa mort. Sa fille Maria Leszczynska épousa Louis XV en 1725.

En 1901, l'École de Nancy, alliance provinciale des industries d'art, est officiellement créée. L'année 1901 marque aussi l'entrée de l'architecture nancéienne dans l'Art nouveau. Louis Majorelle confie au jeune architecte parisien Henri Sauvage la construction de sa maison personnelle, au chantier de laquelle sont associés les Nancéiens Jacques Gruber et Henri Royer, et les artistes parisiens Alexandre Bigot et Francis Jourdain. La Villa Majorelle sera rapidement considérée comme une oeuvre manifeste.

La même année, les architectes Charles et Émile André, en collaboration avec Jacques Gruber et Eugène Vallin, entament la construction des Grands Magasins Vaxelaire, inaugurant ainsi le cycle de modernisation du centre de la ville : commerces, établissements bancaires, brasseries et hôtels se feront désormais les hérauts de l'architecture et de la société nouvelles.

C'est encore en 1901 que les architectes Émile André et Henry Gutton dessinent le lotissement du parc de Saurupt sur le modèle résidentiel du Vésinet - une réponse, partiellement réalisée, à l'extension anarchique de la ville et aux nouvelles attentes de l'habitat urbain.

De ces expériences pionnières naîtront tout un registre de programmes, de typologies, de formes et d'éléments décoratifs - céramique architecturale, ferronnerie, vitrail... - qui marqueront durablement le paysage de la ville.
Cette maison qui se situe près de l'hôpital central est un bon exemple de cette architecture.

The Ecole de Nancy, the Alliance Provinciale des Industries d'Art, was formally founded in 1901. That year also marked the first Art Nouveau architectural work in Nancy. Louis Majorelle invited a young Paris architect Henri Sauvage to build his house, a project in which he was assisted by two Nancy craftsmen Jacques Gruber and Henri Royer, and the Paris artists Alexandre Bigot and Francis Jourdain. Villa Majorelle soon became a seminal work.

Ce petit jardin qui se trouve juste derrière le palais du gouvernement possède des érables, des hêtres pourpres plus que centenaires et des platanes de plus de 5 mètres de circonférence qui remonteraient à la construction du palais et auraient plus de 250 ans!

Here are the Palais du Gouvernement Gardens. These gardens are just in back of "le palais du gouvernement". There, you can find hundred-year-old maples et copper beeches, plane trees with trunks over 16-ft in circumference that date from the construction of the palace over 250 years ago!

Ça y est, la foire attractive de Nancy a ouvert ses portes pour un mois. Chaque année, pendant toute la durée du mois d'avril, les forains investissent la place Carnot et le cours Léopold. Malheureusement, la foire attractive est souvent synonyme de mauvais temps ...

cette foire qui attire surtout enfants et adolescent permet de retomber un peu en enfance en faisant un tour de manège ou en mangeant une barbe à papa!

white stork / cigogne blanche

Hier, nous étions en Alsace , près de Colmar et nous avons visité le centre de réintroduction de la cigogne et de la loutre. Parc privé fondé en 1976, ce centre souhaite faire découvrir le patrimoine naturel local, en poursuivant 2 buts : la conservation des espèces menacées d'extinction en Alsace et la sensibilisation du public sur l'importance de l'équilibre entre l'homme et la nature.

A l'origine, le centre était exclusivement destiné à la reproduction en captivité pour la réintroduction de la cigogne blanche. Mais alors qu'en 1961, l'Alsace comptait 118 individus, en 1982, il ne restait plus que 2 couples sauvages. Ce déclin s'explique par les dangers de la migration (lignes électriques, chasse, sécheresse, pesticides ....). Ainsi, d'après une étude, seulement 10% des cigognes blanches reviennent de leur migration au printemps.

La seule solution est alors de supprimer leur instinct migratoire. Pour cela, les cigognes doivent passer les premières années de leur vie en volière. Après 3 ans, elles sont relâchées pour coloniser les villages d'Alsace (mais aussi d'Allemagne et de Suisse). Et, comme l'instinct migratoire est inscrit dans leur code génétique, les jeunes issus de ces couples sédentaires partiront, eux, en migration.

Grâce au travail du centre, en 2007, l'Alsace comptait plus de 400 couples nicheurs.

Yesterday, we were in Alsace, near Colmar, and we visited the reintroduction center of white storks and otters. Created in 1976, the mission of this center is to present the local natural heritage. The center has two goals : preserve endangered species in Alsace and educate the public on the importance of the balance between mankind and nature.

At the beginning, the center was exclusively a captive breeding for the reintroduction of the white stork. But, as in 1961, there were 118 white storks in Alsace, in 1982, there remained only two pairs! This impressive decline can be explained by the danger of the migration (electrocution, drought, hunting, pesticides...). Only 10% of the White storks came back of their migration in Spring.

So, the only solution is to remove their migratory instinct. For this, the storks must spend the first years of their life in aviary. After 3 years, they are released to colonize the villages of Alsace (Villages of Germany and Switzerland too). And, as the instinct of migration is inscribed in their genetic heritage, the descendants of this generation will migrate.

Thanks to the center, in 2007, nearly 400 pairs of white storks were identified in Alsace.

Cette horloge se trouve dans le parc de la pépinière. J'aime bien son look XIXème siècle. Comme vous pouvez le voir en second plan, il y a un peu de neige. Nous nous sommes réveillés avec une bonne couche de neige mais le soleil de la matinée en a quasiment effacé toute trace.

La salle Poirel est en fait un ensemble culturel situé au centre de Nancy. Cet ensemble est composé d'une salle de spectacle et de plusieurs galeries d'exposition.

Il a été construit à la fin du XIXème siècle grâce à un legs de Victor et Lisinska Poirel, amateurs d'art cultivés. L'ensemble a été rénové en 1999.

This hall is more precisly a cultural center in the heart of Nancy. This center is composed of a hall and several exhibition rooms.

It was built at the end of the XIXth century thanks to a legacy of Victor and Lisinska Poirel, who loved art. It was renovated in 1999.

Il est agréable, lorsque les beaux jours sont de retour, de faire un tour au parc de la pépinière. Ce parc de 21 hectares est au coeur de Nancy, à proximité de la place Stanislas. Hier, le temps était idéal pour faire une pause et prendre un verre sous les arbres en fleurs.

When spring is coming, it's pleasant to have a walk in "le parc de la pépinière". It's a 50 acre park in the heart of Nancy, near the Stanislas square. Yesterday was an ideal day to have a drink outside.

Aujourd'hui, je vous présente le palais du gouvernement. Construit de 1751 à 1753 sur décision de Stanislas, il fait face à l'Hôtel de ville. Dessiné par Héré, les travaux furent conduits par Richard Mique. Sous la révolution, le palais devint le siège du commandement de la 4ème division militaire. En 1824, la préfecture s'y installa. Depuis 1859, le palais est affecté au général commandant un corps d'armée.

Today, a photo of "le palais du gouvernement". It was built from 1751 to 1753 on the order of Stanislas. It's facing the town hall. Plans were drawn by Héré and works were supervised by Richard Mique. During the French revolution, "le palais du gouvernement" became the headquarters of the 4th division's command. The prefecture set up in the palais in 1824. Since 1859, it's assigned to the general commanding an army corps.

En sortant de la place de la carrière, on tombe directement sur la place et la basilique Saint Epvre (la basilique a été endommagée pendant la tempête de 1999 et des travaux de rénovation sont prévus sur 15 ans).

La basilique a été construite pendant la deuxième moitié du XIXème siècle dans un style gothique. Parmi les généreux donateurs on trouve Napoléon III et l'empereur d'Autriche François-Joseph.

The present-day Basilica (it is not the cathedral) was built in the second half of the 19th century in the current gothic revival style. Among its generous donors were Napoleon III of France and the Emperor Francis Joseph I of Austria.
The basilica is undergoing renovation. It was damaged during a violent storm in 1999. Works will last several years.

Gerbéviller

Gerbéviller est une petite commune de 1402 habitants. Cette commune a été marquée par la première guerre mondiale : 80% de la ville fut détruite en août 1914, ce qui lui valut son surnom de "Gerbéviller la martyre". Deux nécropoles sont installées face à face sur la commune : une allemande (deuxième photo) et une française (première photo). J'aime beaucoup cette idée d'avoir installée ces deux nécropoles de cette manière. Parce qu'au fond, quel que soit leur camp, ces soldats sont des victimes de la guerre.

Gerbéviller is a small town of 1402 inhabitants. This small town has been marked by the world war I. Indeed, in august 1914, 80% of the town was destroyed. So the town is nickname "Gerbéviller the martyr". In Gervéviller, two necropolis are face to face : the first one is a German necroplis (second photo) and the second one is a French necropolis (first photo). I like it, it shows that each soldier is a victim of the war independently of his camp.

Nancy possède beaucoup d'immeubles avec ce type d'architecture. Dans l'immeuble de droite, au niveau de la devanture rouge, se trouve un magasin de confiseries. Ce qui me permet de revenir sur les macarons de Nancy. Ces petits gâteaux composés d'amande, de sucre et de blancs d'oeufs sont une spécialité de la ville. Leur origine remonte au XVIIème siècle dans les couvents où il était interdit de manger de la viande. Ce petit gâteau constituait un moyen d'éviter les carences alimentaires. Aujourd'hui, les macarons sont aussi ces petits gâteaux de toutes les couleurs et de tous les goûts qui sont très à la mode.

In Nancy, there is a lot of buildings with this design. On the right, there is a sweetshop where you can find a speciality of Nancy : les macarons. It's a little cake made with almond, sugar and egg white. This cake was created during the XVII century in convents where it was forbidden to eat meat. It was a way not to have nutritional deficiency. Nowadays, you can find macarons in every colours and with every tastes.

J'aime beaucoup la couronne dorée sur le sommet.

Il y a d'autres réverbères de ce type dans la ville, malheureusement, ils ne sont pas nettoyés et n'ont donc pas le même éclat!

Voilà une rue représentative de la vieille ville de Nancy avec des devantures de restaurant colorées. En été, les terrasses fleurissent, et il y a beaucoup de monde. A cette période de l'année, l'ambiance est un peu plus tristounette.

Aujourd'hui, une photo de l'entrée du musée des Beaux arts de Nancy. Ce musée, créé en 1793 est l'un des plus vieux de France. Sa collection comprend des peintures de Tintoret, Caravage, Rubens, Delacroix, Monet, Picasso ...
Je l'ai visité le week-end dernier! J'ai profité de la gratuité de l'entrée comme nous étions le premier dimanche du mois! J'ai beaucoup apprécié cette visite!

Today, a photo of the entrance of the fine arts museum of Nancy. This museum was created in 1793. It's one of the more ancient museum of France. In the collection of the museum you can admire some paints of Tintoret, Caravage, Rubens, Delacroix, Monet, Picasso ...
I visit it last sunday. Indeed, in France, the admission in museum is free each first sunday of the month! It was a very nice visit!

Cette cathédrale a été construite au début du XVIIIème siècle d'après les plans de trois architectes qui se sont succédés : Giovanni Betto, Jules-Hardouin Mansart et Germain Boffrand. Ce chapitre primatial dédié à la Vierge de l'Annonciation ne deviendra une cathédrale qu'en 1777 après la mort de Stanislas. Parmi les points d'intérêts de cette cathédrale, on trouve : les grilles des chapelles latérales (oeuvres de Jean Lamour), les statues de la vierge Marie datant du XVème et du XVIIème siècle et la croisée du transept qui est marquée par une modeste (en comparaison des projets de Mansart) coupole sur pendentifs que Joseph Jacquard a peuplé de cent cinquante personnages symbolisant l'Ancien et le Nouveau Testament, les grands Docteurs de l'Eglise rassemblés autour de la Sainte-Trinité

The church was built at the beginning of the 18th century according to plans by three successive architects, Giovanni Betto, Jules-Hardoin Mansart and Germain Boffrand. It was originally the see of the Primate of Lorraine and only became the cathedral in 1777 after the death of Stanislas.
Of interest are the chapel screens by Jean Lamour, statues of the Virgin Mary from the 15th and 17th centuries, and the painted cupola above the crossing which features one hundred and fifty biblical figures, the Doctors of the Church and the Holy Trinity.

Ingrid Bétancourt a été enlevée par la guerilla colombienne le 23 février 2002. Pour plus d'informations, c'est par ici.

Miguel Galvan Gutierrez, journaliste Cubain, a été condamné à 23 ans de prison pour avoir exercé son travail.

Le promontoire du Léomont constituait un observatoire de premier intérêt et les combats pour sa possession entre les allemands et les soldats - pour la plupart lorrains de la Division de Fer -, ont été d'une extrême violence. Le village de Vitrimont fut détruit. Le monument à la gloire des soldats de la Division de Fer a été dynamité par les allemands dès l'Occupation de Lunéville en 1940 en raison de la référence à la "sauvagerie" allemande inscrite sur son socle, c'était l'oeuvre du sculpteur Broquet.

Celui-ci a été reconstruit en 1950.

La Lorraine possède de nombreux monuments et cimetières à la mémoire de la première et de la deuxième guerre mondiale. C'est un pays de Mémoire.

The headland of Léomont was an important observation post. Battles were hard between German and French to have it. The village of Vitrimont was destroyed. This monument to the glory of the soldiers of the iron division was dynamited by the German in 1940 as Luneville was occupied. The monument was rebuilt in 1950.
The Lorraine is full of monuments and cemeteries in memory of the World War I and World War II. It's a land of memory.

La porte St Nicolas / St Nicolas Gate

La porte St Nicolas fut construite entre 1603 et 1608. Elle tire son nom de la ville de St Nicolas de Port en direction de laquelle elle s'ouvre.

Sur la première photo sont représentées les armoieries de la ville. Le chardon est son emblème et sa devise est : "qui s'y frotte s'y pique" en allusion à la défaite de Charles le téméraire durant la bataille de Nancy en 1477.

The St Nicolas gate was built between 1603 and 1608. This gate is in the direction of the town of St Nicolas de port.

On the first photo you can see the armorial bearings of Nancy. The thistle is the emblem of the city and his motto is "if you play with the fire, you get burned" (it refers to the defeat of Charles le téméraire in 1477 during the battle of Nancy).
